Latest on the Trop

The owner of the Trop (Aztar) said today that they "have not made a final decision" on the status of the Trop in Las Vegas, as of today.

They said they are still in the process of developing information/cost estimates on a PROPOSED new "mid-market" casino on the North property parcel, but would not answer questions beyond info given on todays conf call. They did give planned info like number of rooms: 2725, size of casino: 100,000 sq ft, retail & dining: 200,000 sq ft, parking garage: 3800 cars. They did also say it would not be a super luxury property like Wynn or Eshelon.

What I heard was no new information and no official annoucment on the closing of the existing Trop property. When asked about the Apr 15th date, they basically repeated the answer given in the past: "we may or may not extend the date until which we will accept reservations at Trop Las Vegas".

If I get any more info, I'll post it.

Tip: "P" Rooms at the Paris Las Vegas

Are you staying at the Paris Las Vegas on your next trip to LV? Ask for a "P" Room. The P-Rooms are larger than a standard room, have 2 windows, a larger bathroom and a Strip View. There is no mention of these rooms on the Paris web site. Some folks have reported getting these rooms at no additional charge, just by asking.

The complex will sit on 116 acres of land (currently in escrow) in North Las Vegas near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Cosmopolitan takes another step forward today

The Cosmopolitan Casino Resort & Condos took a major step forward today. According to this article in the LVRJ, the project to be built South of the Bellagio on Las Vegas Blvd containing a casino/hotel, condos retail space, and a 3900 space parking garage announced a $415 million construction loan from Deutsche Bank.

The target date for the first phase of the project to open is around Sept 1, 2008.

Tip: Getting a Cab back to the Airport

Here's a great Vegas Tip: If you are planning to take a cab from your hotel to the airport, have a bellman pick the luggage from from your room or leave your luggage with the Bell desk. When you are ready to go, tell the Bellman that you need to get to the airport fast and ask if he can help you bypass the cab line. At most major Vegas hotels, the bellman can usually assist with this. If they can do so, please be sure and tip the bellman appropriately.

McCarran Passengers: 40 Million and counting!

Officials at McCarran Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas recently announced that as of the end of November, over 40 Million passengers had passed through the airport in 2005. This is an increase of almost 7% over the Nov, 2004 totals. This calculation is based on arriving and departing passengers.

Who is the largest air carrier serving LAS? Southwest, by a mile. With a major hub at McCarran, Southwest handled over 1.1 Million passengers in November 2005 alone, an increase of 7.4% over November 2004. The next busiest airline serving Vegas is America West (who recently merged with US Airways), who handled roughly 615, 000 passengers in November.

Wynn Las Vegas Resort and Country Club will open its much-anticipated Tryst nightclub on New Year's Eve, Saturday,Dec. 31. CES is the Consumer Electronic Show. The show takes place January 5-8, 2006. It is one of the largest shows to hit Vegas each year. This is where vendors of all types of electronic goods (and I mean ALL types) get together to show off their latest wares. A crowd of over 100,000 is expected to attend.

If you are town for vacation and not for the show, I have a few suggestions:

Stay away from the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Venetian during the day. These are the main show locations.
Avoid the monorail during the morning and afternoon rush hours. Many CES attendees will use the monorail to get to/from the convention center. It will be crazy. It should be ok to use the monorail during the day, however.
Avoid the hotel coffee shops and buffets in the morning each day of the show. Lines will be longer than normal with show attendees getting breakfast before the start of a very long day.

The show is suppose to be restricted to the "trade". If you are thinking about braving the crowds and checking it out, register on-line before 12AM on Dec 30th to get a free pass to the show. Otherwise, you'll have to fight the crowds at registration and might have to pay a fee (unless you can snag a pass from someone while you are there).

Is the Trop closing in March, 06?

For those who are not aware, The Tropicana Hotel web site is not accepting reservations after March 15, 2006. The rumor mill has been questioning the future of the famous 1900 room hotel casino for sometime. The fact that several of the regular acts playing at the Trop have closed or are closing soon, with no replacements announced is probably another bad sign.

If a stay at the Trop is on your list, it appears you better hurry. By the way, Joan Rivers is scheduled to do one show there on January 14th and Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition is scheduled to close on Jan 31st.

The Tropicana Hotel Casino in Las Vegas is owned by the Aztar Corporation, with headquarters in Phoenix, AZ. Please note: As best I can determine neither The Tropicana in Las Vegas or Aztar has made any official announcement as to the long term status of the property. It should also be noted that during Aztar's Oct Earning Conference Call, the Las Vegas property was only accepting reservations until Feb 15. During that call, executives indicated this date had changed several times in the recent past and was still subject to change.

Priceline.com Releases Results Of New Year's Eve Travel Survey; Las Vegas is the Top Party Spot in the U.S., While U.K. Residents Prefer London to Ring in the New Year

Dec. 26, 2005--According to a new priceline.com(R) hotel survey, Las Vegas is the most-preferred New Year's Eve party spot for Americans, while London is #1 among Britons ringing in the New Year.

The survey, which measures consumer travel intentions, is based on a total of more than 21,000 actual hotel reservation requests made by American and U.K. priceline.com customers for the New Year's Eve period.

Today's hotel survey uncovered some shifts in Americans' party plans. California and Florida showed big gains in attracting New Year's travelers. Last year, California cities took none of the top 20 spots on priceline.com's most popular destinations list. This year, California has 5 of the top 20 spots. Similarly, Florida cities took 6 spots in the top 20 this year, compared to 3 last year.

Major parade and celebration sites also did well. #3 on the list was New York City's Midtown West neighborhood, home to Times Square. Philadelphia, with its annual Mummer's Parade, ranked #38. The Los Angeles area, home to the Rose Bowl Parade, took numerous spots on the list.

Many Americans were headed overseas to celebrate New Year's Eve. International destinations have made a slow, steady recovery since 9/11. This year, destinations making the list included London, Paris, Sydney and Bangkok.

Britons, by contrast, were fairly consistent in their New Year's Eve plans compared to last year. For the 2nd straight year, London was the favorite destination on the Top 50 List, followed closely by Edinburgh. Outside of the U.K., France took four additional places on this year's list and the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and Italy (Rome) appeared on the list for the first time.

KA: "The Preview"

Due to scheduling conflicts, I have not been able to attend a performance of KA from Cirque du Soleil at the MGM Grand. This is something I plan to rectify on a future visit.

I was, however, lucky enough to attend the original press conference announcing the show back in September of 2004. The press conference included several performance segments. I was also allowed to get some great photos during these preview performances, such as the "Wheel of Death" seen here. (Please note: photography is not allowed during the actual performance).

Based on what I saw and what I have heard from those who have seen the show, I can't wait to see it myself.

Nevada still Fastest-Growing State

Nevada Edges Out Arizona as the Fastest-Growing State

Nevada’s population increased by 3.5 percent between July 1, 2004, and July 1, 2005, marking the 19th consecutive year that Nevada has been the fastest-growing state, according to estimates released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. Arizona was a close second with a growth rate just under 3.5 percent.

The nation’s population rose by 0.9 percent (2.8 million people) over the period, to 296.4 million.

The South and West again monopolized the list of the fastest-growing states; Idaho, Florida, Utah, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, Delaware and Oregon rounded out the top 10.
Oregon replaced New Mexico on the list of the top 10 fastest-growing states this year. The South now accounts for 36 percent of the nation’s total population, with the West comprising 23 percent, the Midwest 22 percent and the Northeast 18 percent.

California remained the most populous state in the nation with 36.1 million people in 2005. The second and third most populous states were Texas (22.9 million) and New York (19.3 million).

New South Coast Hotel/Casino opens

The latest Boyd/Coast Casino property, the South Coast Casino Hotel opens for business today.

The hotel casino is located at 9777 Las Vegas Blvd South at Silverado. It sits on 60 acres and has a Southern California theme.

In addition to an 80,000 Sq Ft. Casino, the hotel complex includes 1350 rooms, 150,000 sq ft of events space and an Equestrian Center which they claim is " the finest indoor horse facility in the country." Visitors will also be treated to several new resturaunts and a 64 lane Bowling Center.

Over the years, I have been to Vegas so many times, I've lost count. I've stayed in many hotels. I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly. Some of the hotels I've stayed in no longer exist.

On one of my trips, I was lucky enough to stay in a Terrace Suite at the MGM Grand. These suites are among the few in Vegas that have a full terrace attached. While the room amenities are nice, the Terrace makes the stay very special.

Before I left, I knew I had to make a video. Please understand: this was shot with a Sony Cybershot and I'm no Spielberg . But I think you'll get an idea of why I really enjoyed this particular stay.

I love Chocolate

I love Chocolate. My love for it probably borders on an addiction. Whenever I'm in Vegas, I have to stop at Ethel M's and pick some up.

Ethel M's is the Nevada based gourmet chocolate division of M&M Mars. It's named for the family matriarch and sells what I personally consider some of the best chocolates the world has ever seen.

If you have never done so, next time your in Vegas, please give them a try. Ethel M's shops are located throughout Las Vegas, including McCarran Airport and M&M's World on the Las Vegas Strip. On my last trip, I found a coupon flyer with discounts, giveaways, etc. One of the coupons was for a free sample of Ethel M's. You just know where I went next.

Ethel M's Headquarters and Factory are located in Henderson, NV, only a few minutes drive from Vegas. They offer free tours of the factory, a beautiful garden built by Founder Forrest Mars for his wife and of course offer all their products are available for purchase. Years ago, the tour was very popular primarily because they gave out plenty of free samples. Sadly, this is no longer the case. Today, each visitor gets a single sample. Bummer.

(Oh, if you are not planning a trip to Vegas soon and don't live near one of the other shops, you can also get some direct from Ethel M's. )

"How much is a cab from the airport to my hotel?"

One of the most common questions I get from my readers is how much does it cost for a cab from Vegas' McCarran Airport to their hotel. The good news is the Nevada Taxi Cab Authority has put up a list of estimated fares to most of the major hotels (you'll need to scroll down to the bottom of the page for the list):

Note the disclaimer - these are estimates. It will at least give you an idea of what the fare should be. For years, the only way you could get this was via fax upon request. Someone at the Authority final had the good sense to put it on-line.

About "The Tunnel": The Tunnel is a section of road that goes under the airport that takes you to Rt 215 and the I-15. There has always been the question regarding if you should let the cab driver take the Tunnel. In most cases the answer is no. Since the fare calculation is based on distance, taking the tunnel means adding several miles to the trip, which increases the cost. So if you are staying on the Strip, you are better off going via Tropicana. The trip will be quicker (but not very scenic) if the driver takes one of the streets parallel to Las Vegas Blvd. These include Frank Sinatra Drive, Koval Ave or Paradise Rd, depending on the destination. However, if you are staying Downtown and time is a factor, you might allow the driver to take the Tunnel to the I-15 to downtown. If there are no traffic problems, this is the most efficient route.

One more thing: Make a note of the cab information. I strongly suggest making note of the cab company name and cab number when you get in a cab. Taxis are one of the most common places to leave personal effects. Having the cab information increases the liklehood of getting your stuff back quickly.

Whenever someone mentions Las Vegas, my eyes light up!. You see, I have been there so many times, I've lost count. I love the place. People say I have so much great information stored up, I should write a book, or at least run a web site. Well, since no publishers are knocking at my door, this is the next best thing.

My bold plan is to provide news and information for Visitors to Vegas, based on my many years of experience. On any given day, you might find a news story, show review, link to a Vegas web site I feel is of value, one of my many Vegas photos (such as the one above) or an answer to the most common questions I get.
